Aviation Psychology

What is Aviation Psychology?
As an Aviation Psychologist, I deal with the human performance and mental health on board the aircraft and anywhere else regarding airline pilots. Working as an airline pilot is quite complex, they are facing several and different kinds of stress factors to mitigate with during operation and in private life as well. Operational stress factors can be such as high responsibility (200 people sitting behind you), on-going simulator and line check exams which you always have to be prepared for, and the high vigilance during the critical phases of a flight, such as take- off and landing. Not to mention the possibility of an abnormal situation or an emergency one (slipping off the runway or having an engine failure or fire), even in normal, "daily life" circumstances pilots are facing many stressors. Besides these stressors comes the schedule of a pilot, which includes night flights and early morning flights, having a disrupted circadian rhythm and due to that, a disrupted private life as well . This can result in fatigue or even burnout, which can affect their sleep quality, relationships, satisfaction with life and an overall downgrade in mental health.
That is why it is essential to reach out for support , when it is needed. If you are an airline pilot, and facing sleep disorder, relationship issues, eating disorder, substance abuse or any kind of problem you feel you have run out of the tools to manage it, ask for an aviation psychologist support. Private aviation psychologists are working with maximum confidentiality and professionalism.
